The Rollercoaster of Everything

Do you ever feel energetic one moment and exhausted the next, craving carbs or sugar and feeling irritable? This may be due to the blood sugar and cortisol rollercoaster.

I recently ran a workshop on balancing hormones, where we explored how this cycle is a key factor in hormonal imbalances at all stages of life, regardless of biological sex.

The blood sugar and cortisol rollercoaster affects more than just sex hormones; it’s the fundamental imbalance behind many health issues in the body:

  • Stress: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Skin issues: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Anxiety: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Digestive issues: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Frequent infections: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Pain and inflammation: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Blood, heart, and circulation issues: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • Candida and parasite infections: Blood sugar and cortisol imbalance

  • And the list goes on...

How Blood Sugar and Cortisol Interact

When you eat carbohydrates or sugary foods or face stress, your blood sugar spikes, and the stress hormone cortisol rises. This triggers your body to release insulin to lower blood sugar. However, sometimes it drops too much, leading to an energy crash. Your body then produces more cortisol to bring blood sugar levels back up, resulting in cravings for quick energy—usually more sugar or carbs. This cycle can leave you feeling fatigued and stuck in a pattern of crashes and cravings.

Most people have heard of insulin, but there are other hormones that regulate hunger, energy, and promote feelings of satisfaction; they often struggle to function properly on this rollercoaster.

Unfortunately, the allopathic healthcare system typically only addresses blood sugar imbalances in the context of diabetes. Doctors may check blood sugar levels but since they change all the time, the results are often irrelevant and pointless.

Many complementary health approaches also overlook this critical aspect. Although there’s a growing awareness around these issues, Kinesiology emphasises natural approaches rather than relying on technology to monitor health. We use natural muscle testing to identify blood sugar and cortisol imbalances and provide natural balancing techniques.

How to Break the Cycle

To regain balance and break free from the blood sugar and cortisol rollercoaster, consider the following strategies:

  1. Eat Balanced Meals: Incorporate protein, healthy fats, and fibre-rich carbohydrates (leafy green vegetables) to stabilise blood sugar levels.

  2. Reduce carbohydrates: Particularly wheat and sugar, most carbohydrates, including fruit, turn into sugar within your body.

  3. Supplements: Chromium, magnesium, omega oils balance blood sugar levels.

  4. Avoid Skipping Meals: Regular meals help prevent energy dips and cravings. (Intermittent fasting is good when you have control of your blood sugars.

  5. Limit Caffeine: Caffeine can exacerbate cortisol spikes, particularly when consumed on an empty stomach.

  6. Manage Stress: Practices like mindfulness, Epsom salt baths, or meditation can lower cortisol levels and improve overall well-being.

  7. Prioritise Sleep: Ensure you get enough restorative sleep to support hormone regulation.

  8. Exercise Moderately: Avoid excessive exercise, which can increase cortisol levels.

  9. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration helps maintain energy levels and reduces stress.
